If the year was a Christmas tree, December would be the glittery star at the top. It’s the month we all work towards, hanging our baubles of setbacks and achievements and stringing our tinsel strands of hope and dreams as we go. And now the lights are up all over the city; carols and children play in the streets… it’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s your time to relax, unwind and enjoy.
But with festivities often comes the accompanying frisson of excitement and anxiety over what to wear. You want to be comfortable, yet glamorous; you want to stick to your style, but the stores are proffering a dizzying array of options; you want to make an impression, but you don’t want to end up with a dress you only end up wearing once before you stash it at the back of your closet because it’s that memorable. We get it. We’re here to help.
Here, we present Thread Theory’s top three tips for dressing for the festive season—and beyond:
- Keep your social calendar in mind
It’s no good buying a sequined gold miniskirt (even if it’s cheap) if all you have penciled in are office parties and weekends chilling at home with family. Look at your social engagements and figure out a commonality in their dress codes. Do they take place in formal settings? Are they with colleagues or people you don’t know very well? Play safe and dial down the festivity in your outfit to, quite literally, a glimmer. Our On a Frosty Night Dress features a gradient hem dipped in metallic tinsel tints on a modest skater dress cutting, which would be comfortable to sit down in, but bring quite the party when you stand up and twirl around. The best of both worlds, indeed!
Bonus: we can see you taking these outfits for a second spin for special occasions throughout the year, not just Christmas. Our Beads Under the Mistletoe Dress features an embellished collar atop a classic A-line shift shape in neutral tones—perfect for skipping accessorizing on days when you want just a little dazzle of something special.
Go classical with a twist
We may not have white Christmases here in Singapore (not naturally, at least), but you can still emulate the dreamland wonder of The Nutcracker by playing your very own snow fairy. Our Winter Wonderland Dress features intricate geometrical lace cut-outs on a dramatically flared skirt. Just like the snowflakes drifting through the air…
If dancing isn’t your thing, go punk plaid! Bring fuzzy firesides to our tropical climate in our Santa Baby Midi Skirt. Textures and prints are great ways to bring a flavour of the season to ordinary outfits. We can see it with a black slim turtleneck on a trip to Gardens by the Bay, or with a light grey camisole on casual date night. Plus, plaid is such a classic print that it won’t immediately be associated with Christmas when you wear it in the other months.
Pick up a seasonal palette
Being a princess for a season never hurts. Our A Glitter Bit of Me Dress pairs classic boning and feminine flare fit for royalty with light, pastel colours that wouldn’t be out of place in a winter wonderland. Slip on metallic heels and an embellished belt or statement necklace for a night out at a glamorous dinner setting, or wear these with simple ballet flats for a get-together with friends. We can see these being spruced up with a button-up shirt worn daringly underneath, or with a jauntily cut cropped blazer slipped over, too. You really can’t go wrong with dressing like royalty!
We hope these tips set your mind at ease. Let your heart be light, darlings—go, have yourself a merry little Christmas!
